Recfactor Notes for BlazeTorrent

Welcome to the recfactor notes for BlazeTorrent! This document is intended to help guide future refactoring and improvements as the project evolves. Please update this file with any technical debt, architectural concerns, or possible improvements you identify.

Repository Overview

  • Project Name: BlazeTorrent
  • Description: This is a learning project created on top of Blazor and a custom BitTorrent C# client, developed with the help of CodeCrafters.
  • Primary Languages:
    • C# (52.4%)
    • HTML (24.2%)
    • CSS (23.4%)

General Refactoring Ideas

  • Code Structure:

    • Review the overall solution structure for separation of concerns (e.g., UI, client logic, networking).
    • Group related files by feature or layer (UI, Core, Networking, etc.).
    • Consider introducing more interfaces for easier testing and future scalability.
  • Naming Conventions:

    • Ensure all classes, methods, and variables use consistent and descriptive naming.
    • Refactor any legacy or unclear names inherited from early prototypes.
  • Componentization (Blazor):

    • Break large Blazor components into smaller, reusable components.
    • Move repeated code (UI or logic) into shared components or partial classes.
  • Async/Await Usage (C#):

    • Audit all asynchronous operations for proper use of async/await patterns.
    • Avoid unnecessary blocking calls or synchronous wrappers.
  • Error Handling:

    • Centralize exception handling where appropriate.
    • Use custom exceptions for domain-specific errors.
  • Configuration Management:

    • Move hardcoded values into configuration files or settings objects.
    • Use options pattern for dependency injection where relevant.
  • Dependency Injection:

    • Ensure all services are registered and resolved via DI.
    • Refactor any static or tightly coupled code to use DI.
  • UI/UX Improvements:

    • Clean up HTML/CSS for accessibility and responsiveness.
    • Standardize CSS classes and consider using a CSS framework if not already in use.

Technical Debt & To-Do List

  • Audit networking logic for adherence to BitTorrent protocol best practices.
  • Identify and refactor any "God objects" (classes doing too much).
  • Write or improve XML documentation for public APIs.
  • Increase unit test coverage, especially for core torrenting logic.
  • Extract magic numbers and strings into constants/enums.
  • Review and update NuGet dependencies for security and performance.
  • Optimize performance for large torrents or many simultaneous connections.

Open Questions

  • Are there any known threading or concurrency issues in the BitTorrent client?
  • Should we consider supporting additional UI frameworks or platforms in the future?
  • Are there opportunities for modular plugins (e.g., protocol extensions, storage backends)?
