Correcting city names

City names are a mess.

Describe the solution you'd like

The following city names should be corrected:

• San Jose -> San José
• St. Johns -> St. John's
• UTC Time -> UTC
  The "T" in UTC already stands for "Time" or the French "Temps"
• South Pole -> South Pole Station
  The south pole doesn't have a time zone, because all time zones converge there. Only the south pole station uses a time zone
• Center -> Bismarck
  Center is completely wrong. It would be Central Time, but since this is a list of cities and North Dakota is tagged in weblate, its capital should be the name of this entry.

The following countries should be renamed as their capital cities, because it is a list of cities, not countries:

• Andorra -> Andorra la Vella
• Panama -> Panama-City
• Maldives -> Malé
• Cape Verde -> Praia
  !!! The first letter changes. This needs to be adressed while renaming to avoid sorting errors !!!
• Malta -> Valetta

• Martinique -> Fort-de-France

• Easter Island -> Hanga Roa

I have already corrected these names in the German translation, but the English version is read only, so I can't correct it there.

The following territories should be deleted, because their capital cities are already on the list:

• Newfoundland (St. John's)
• Puerto Rico (San Juan)

The Canary Islands should be replaced by two entries, because they have two capitals:

• Santa Cruz de Tenerife (executive and legislative)
• Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (executive and judicial)

Since these names are relatively long, it might be an option to make an exception here and keep this entry as Canary Islands to preserve legibility, especially when displaying this time zone in the widget.

I just noticed another city that needs renaming:

Nuestra Señora de La Paz -> La Paz

Nobody will actually search for the official name. The city is known as La Paz. Even the Spanish Wikipedia entry is named "La Paz". https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Paz

I have corrected it in the German translation, but the English version still needs to be updated.

Another piece of code from Google's AOSP DeskClock app that needs cleaning up! 😅

I have already corrected these names in the German translation, but the English version is read only, so I can't correct it there.

That's normal; the English version is the default for the app, so only the maintainer can update it.

Some comments:

• San Jose seems correct for the America/Los_Angeles time zone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jose,_California);
• Valetta is written with 2 "L" so : Valletta ;
• Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have been added with these names to ensure consistency with the other entries.

Not always; "time" in French can also mean "hour" as in the sentence: "It's time to go." translated into French as: "C'est l'heure d'y aller."
In any case, I removed the term "time"; it doesn't bother me.

San Jose seems correct

Here is a quote from the Wikipedia article you linked:

By convention, the spelling San José is only used when the name is spelled in mixed upper- and lowercase letters, but not when the name is spelled only in uppercase letters, as on the city logo. The accent reflects the Spanish version of the name, and the dropping of accents in all-capital writing was once typical in Spanish. While San José is commonly spelled both with and without the acute accent over the "e", the city's official guidelines indicate that it should be spelled with the accent most of the time and sets forth narrow exceptions, such as when the spelling is in URLs, when the name appears in all-capital letters, when the name is used on social media sites where the diacritical mark does not render properly, and where San Jose is part of the proper name of another organization or business, such as San Jose Chamber of Commerce, that has chosen not to use the accent-marked name.

So Wikipedia doesn't follow its own information. Also FWIW Google Maps includes the acute accent. I think it should be included in the app.

Yes, in general, but here it stands for "Temps".

In 1967 the CCIR adopted the names Coordinated Universal Time and Temps Universel Coordonné for the English and French names with the acronym UTC to be used in both languages.

I just released Nightly-27 and realized I forgot to rename Malta to Valletta. 😭😭

Funny, that we now both struggled with Valletta 😁

Well, there's always next time. At least it's a nightly and not a full release.

I've checked it out and there is also another mistake: San Salvador is listed twice.
