What exactly is the .elf for? |

Debugging purposes. If someone reproduces a crash while using the application, we can use the exception info from the logfile and the ELF binary to trace the origin of the crash and find out why it happened in the first place. |

The gamecard submenu exclusively deals with gamecard-related operations, not with the software it holds. In order to work with specific software titles, use the "user titles menu" option (with the gamecard inserted) and look for the game you wish to dump extracted assets from. Make sure to choose the "nca / nca fs options" submenu, then select:
You'll see an option to browse the selected NCA FS section, as well as another option to read additional data from an available update (which is set to the highest available update by default). |

There has been some discussion about adding shortcuts for ExeFS and RomFS sections from Program NCAs, but I have yet to find the time to do it. There's also no clear way to make the menus simpler -- Switch formats are convoluted like that. You have multiple NCAs per title (each one of a different type), and multiple virtual FS sections per NCA (each one of a different type, as well). Sometimes, a title may even hold multiple NCAs of the same type -- e.g. check SM3DAS, which has 4 Program + 4 Control NCAs. As it is right now, users are expected to get familiar with these concepts. When it comes to NCA options, nxdumptool is nowadays somewhat comparable to PC programs like hactool / hactoolnet, which let you extract content from any kind of NCA -- except this is running directly on your Switch. The lack of additional NCA options was a serious overlook in legacy nxdumptool, and something I specifically set out to correct with the ongoing rewrite. |

You need to do exactly what the error message is telling you to do: redump your console keys. We are unable to provide any further support in regards to key dumping -- you're on your own in this particular matter. |

I keep getting a "Failed to retrieve FS .data segment dump!" error trying to start the application. Not sure what that would mean. I've tried both this version and the migdumptool version but they behave identically. I've tried older HorizonOS / Atmosphere version as well but it made no difference. The non-rewrite version works without any issues as far as I can see, but I'm not getting the files I need from it. First of all, we don't provide support to flashcards or nxdumptool forks. That being said, make sure you're running the application from the homebrew menu by overriding a title with the R button. Forwarders are not supported. |

Hey, sorry if this is a redundant question or anything, but I have to ask. My Malwarebytes detected the host file as malware. This is a false positive, right? I'm sure that's what's going on, but I just wanted confirmation since I've had bad experiences in the past with malware :( |

Hi there. This is, sadly, just a very commmon issue with Python scripts compiled to bytecode using PyInstaller or Nuitka. We guarantee the binary is not a malware. You can check both the Python script's code and the EXE generation steps, as well as the GitHub action steps. |

Hey this is my first time doing all this so please explain to me like im a child. I dumped from sysNAND and went to reboot. But the site im using as directions is outdated and wants me to find "dump gamecard content" in the title takeover. Wondering what would be the equivalent of that on the new rewrite? Just trying to be able to create mods on acnh but im very much a beginner. Thank you! |

Most Switch mods work by modifying extracted ExeFS and RomFS areas in Program NCAs from specific games, so I'll assume this is your case as well. Make sure the gamecard for the game you wish to dump data from is inserted and go into the Afterwards, go into the Finally, choose the option marked as (*) = Please note that if there are multiple Program NCAs, you may very well have to repeat the steps for each one of them, depending on the mod requirements. Menus are very convoluted because the software architecture and binary formats used by the Switch are very convoluted to begin with. It's one of the tradeoffs I accepted while working on the rewrite. Furthermore, I'd also suggest setting up USB dumping to completely avoid potentially slow dump speeds due to abysmal random I/O speeds normally offered by SD cards. You can do so by following these steps:

The latest version seems to have a display problem. And my system version is "21.0.1 | AMS 1.10.0 | E" Besides, I encountered a compatibility problem with a dumped game today. Though I found it may not be caused from nxdumptool-rewrite, I wonder if you have any clues about it. I'll fix this as soon as I get back home. The CI/CD pipeline we use relies on the devkitA64 Docker image provided by devkitPro, which uses a libnx commit with this issue. As for the MigSwitch problem, we provide no support for emulators nor flashcards. Please understand. |

FAQ
Why is this a pre-release instead of an actual release?
The rewrite has been an ongoing project for some years now, but personal issues and time contraints have made it very hard for me to work on it on a consistent basis -- this makes me feel like the
rewritebranch is not ready for a full-fledged release.However, I also feel like it is much, much more advanced than what any
mainbranch build could offer -- feel free to take a look at the README for a full list of features.In my eyes, all previous nxdumptool releases have been deprecated for some time now, which led me to affectionately call them
legacybuilds.Why are you providing a link instead of an actual binary?
Some time ago, @Whovian9369 helped me setup a CI/CD pipeline for the
rewritebranch, which basically makes it possible to automatically build new commits as soon as they're pushed to the GitHub repository. There's no way in hell I'm gonna come here and update the attached binary each time new commits are pushed. Please understand.These builds are ugly, why didn't you keep the old UI?
Because the old UI was very hard to maintain. The old codebase is a complete mess and it disgusts me (which also led me to further fuel my own self-esteem issues, but that's another topic). The idea is to eventually migrate to a borealis-based UI, much like the one from sys-clk manager.
Please bear with me for the time being. Deploying builds with console-based output is much easier to maintain and test while still developing the actual functionalities.
Why does my Asian/Cyrillic game display as garbage text?
As explained by the previous point, these builds use console-based output for simplicity's sake. Sadly, this feature doesn't support UTF-8 output. Please understand.
The new menu layout is confusing, why didn't you keep the old layout?
That'd be because the old layout was even more confusing, to my eyes. Now, the
gamecard menustrictly handles gamecard-related dump options (like XCI, certificate, HFS partitions, etc.), while theuser titlesmenu strictly handles dump operations for actual software titles, even if they're gamecard-based (like NSP, ticket, individual NCAs / NCA FS sections, etc.).Admittedly, it may take some time to get used to, but it's very powerful -- almost as if you were using hactool right on your Switch to extract NCA FS sections, for example.
