STAC Items optional assets

I recently came along on a dev installation of the EOEPCA architecture and tools. There, the "assets"->"thumbnail" property of a produced STAC Item is obligatory. I objected, since I understand that this makes no sense, but I got the answer that this is somehow inherited from the EOEPCA validators.

I could not locate such a thing in the EOEPCA repos, but then again I might have not looked thoroughly.

Is this something that I overlooked? Is there any kind of a validation of this type? And if so, what is the reasoning behind? Should a STAC Item of e.g. fly trap locations have a thumbnail?

I am not aware of any such convention.

Can you please specify, which building blocks / software and versions this dev installation uses, and where you experienced this validation error?

Thanks @j08lue, I just wanted to confirm that it is not part of the EOEPCA. I've contacted the dev team behind that installation and they confirmed that it is just a custom modification they've made.
