Renaming vimix?

As pointed out in #179, searching for 'vimix' online leads to too many unrelated results, in particular confusing it with v-mix.

Let's brainstorm on a new name, we'll see if this is enough motivation for such a big change ! (github history lost, all documentation to update, referencing in Flatpak and Snap store to reset, etc..).

About my vote : I suggest going back to GLMixer 🙂

History already "known" and related to this project. Even if its total rewrite as you said, for me Vimix always been like a "GLMixer v2" 😊

Here are my thoughts about the other names:

• Jackdaw: Would be my second choice, but I think the "DAW" term might confuse users with Digital Audio Workstation
  • Might not be a problem as big as I think, for example Kdenlive is a linear video editor and having "live" in the name doesn't seemed such a big problem
• Vijay and Crowma already exists (one is a indian related name, the other is a youtube channel). Even if they seem not that well known as vMix, if there is a rebranding its better to not do the same errors again 😉
• Murmur: Might prevent you being in package managers as it was the name of the Mumble voip server (they since renamed it t mumble-server)
• Other suggestions : playing words around the crow / birds are great ideas to keep consistency with the logo 👍

Renaming is always a difficult task.

I do agree that Vimix is hard to find and often leads to Vmix.
Now it is also the name of an app on the Apple store that creates videos from photos using AI, as well as another app. This is what DuckDuckGo proposes...

I personally like the name Vimix, it sounds good and it is clear what is about.
What if it were a small change to the name, perhaps to coincide with a major version change?
I'm thinking about it.

I'd like to suggest why NOT go back to GLMixer.
GLMixer has a history as a cross platform tool that includes Win compatibility. Many Reddit threads refer to it as a great opensource tool specifically for Windows; this is archived and still comes up in searches and in software archives.
If Vimix becomes GLmixer, there will be immediate and long term confusion when new users search for VJ tools for Win, plus when people are troubleshooting.
As an aside, and related to this, it is quite difficult with some searches for vimix because search engines insist on including (even highlighting) results for vmix, so a name change does have some usefulness.
My bias on this is that I still use GLMixer - I've tried vimix on linux but its proved unstable (semi-regular unexpected crashes), and without an apple device I'm stuck with it. Would love to help with a port of vimix to Win but I don't think I have the skills.

On my side, Vimix works great on Linux but my usage is probably simpler than yours
(I still must admit that on earlier versions I had some crashes here and there. Now I never encountered those, I would even consider it is sufficiently stable for production)

About the win support, there is an ongoing effort being done in issue #37. Maybe this will change your mind once its fixed

Thanks, your comments help me think about the question and I truly appreciate that people care about my work!

For GLMixer, I can't believe that it is still active! 😄 Backward compatibility is one thing we can thank MS Windows for!
So indeed, if GLMixer is still used, it could be confusing. The original idea was also that vimix would be very different, or at least take the best of it and simplify it. Also, I am truly open to have a Windows port of vimix, but this is a significant (and not very interesting) programming effort. Maybe now that AI can code, it will help me do this. Let's see...

Anyways, what this makes me think about is a merge of both; GLVimix ?
