Bug: Grayjay uses *a lot* of data despite video quality set to 144p

Reproduction steps

0. Set all quality settings to lowest 144p
1. Just using grayjay a few hours a day listening to video (screen off) with the youtube plugin

Actual result

It cost me 3GB of data in just 3 days over the 5G network.
My entire data budget gone like this in just 3 days... 😭

Expected result

I would expect the player to only stream audio at a reasonable cost, it should only have used a few megabytes at most, not 3GB!

Did you download any videos? When you watch videos are they UMP streams?
You can check the video quality and it should say either "Android" or "UMP" next to resolution.

I didn't download any video, no.
I don't really know what are UMP streams, I've seen the acronym pop up from time to time at the bottom of the screen but I'm not sure how often or how consistently...
On the current video I'm watching it says "Android 144p25 video/mp4" for the video quality and "Andoid mp4a.40.2 [Normalized]" for the audio quality. I haven't checked every videos to see if they were using this quality every time but I would expect this behavior by default. This is also not the general condition because I'm at home and not moving, most of the videos/audios streaming occur while I'm driving in my car though...

If you use your data from home to open few videos, can you check if you are getting "UMP" instead of "Android" for videos?

And I´ve checked on 3 videos from home via Wifi and it´s always android for video and audio, no UMP.

We believe you there is the usage, we are just trying to figure out where it comes from because it doesn't make much sense that playing from videos from WiFi only consumes GB's of mobile data.

UMP videos don't have split streams so you can't listen to audio only which means if you background UMP video you would still load all video data which consumes a lot but since you say you only get Android streams that doesn't fit here.

Hi, could you please clarify this or explain more as I am also facing the same issue. My mobile data usage has skyrocketed in recent days and grayjay is the culprit. I have in my setting both android and iOS streams enabled and also use UMP as fallback(I believe this is the default). However, is it possible to only use android streams because it is not obvious immediately if the video I am playing uses ump or android. Based on your comment I checked and multiple videos only have UMP option for streaming. Is there a workaround for this? Thanks!

You are correct, android and iOS streams are default and UMP is there as a fallback so we only fetch UMP stream if there is no Android/iOS stream available.

There is no option to disable UMP streams and unfortunately currently they only work with combined video and audio. We are looking into make them work separately but that's a lot of work and investigation :)
