Is it possible to run kepler with a WMS layer already loaded when it opens?

I'm trying to run one of the kepler examples, that I have built locally, with a wms layer already loaded when I execute yarn start. I have tried modifying the visState of the reducer initial state (following the "custom-reducer" example) and I have also tried addDataToMap both to no avail. Does anyone know if this is possible and could provide any guidance or code snippet on how to do it, on the custom-reducer example perhaps?
