bad UX for window dimension persistence #19868

@mcandre

Description

@mcandre

Windows Terminal version

1.23.20211.0

Windows build number

10.0.26100.0

Other Software

No response

Steps to reproduce

  1. Tile Windows Terminal to a portion of the display.
  2. Relaunch Windows Terminal.

Expected Behavior

Windows Terminal should persist the last used location, width, and height of the previous window, across relaunches, like modern applications.

Actual Behavior

Windows Terminal resets the location, width, and height to a generic blob.

Note that persistedWindowLayout is not a complete solution, as it has multiple quirks.

  • Seems to sometimes have no effect on relaunch location/dimensions. Unclear whether this is impacted with the method of launching Windows Terminal (taskbar shortcut, start menu shortcut, AutoHotKey).
  • I think it preserves multiple windows, which is not what I want at all.
  • Forces ugly restore text to write to terminal emulators. Definitely don't want that. No documentation on disabling that, with WSL for example.

By contrast, other terminal emulators tend to not have this problem. Other Windows applications tend to not have this problem.
