Matching parentheses with the TTY editor

The TTY structure editor doesn't support parenthesis blinking or other aids for matching parentheses, so how did you do it back in the day? Manually? Is this why Interlisp introduced square bracket superparentheses?

The question kind of presumes an assumption that "it" was a thing that one would want done.
But Using a structure editor (Sedit or EDITMODE(TELETYPE)), there is rarely any need to type a right paren or balance parentheses.
