Sound muted by default

I am the creator of Origami Linux a Fedora Cosmic Atomic Based distro, after first install when opening a video Cosmic Player is muted by default.

Is this the default setting for the application? I couldn't find any file in ~/.config for setting this option.

Mute state is handled by the sound server, e.g., PipeWire or PulseAudio. As you found, COSMIC Player does not persist it itself. The state flow is roughly COSMIC Player -> iced video -> GStreamer -> sound server.

I did a quick check through the source of the first three and did not see any obvious "default to true" flows. Ideally, when you launch COSMIC Player for the first time, the sound server should recognize it and initialize with sane (unmuted) defaults. Disclaimer that I may have missed a subtle bug!

Few ideas:

• Can you share your sound server? You can use pactl info | grep "Server Name"
• Is COSMIC Player the only thing that starts muted the first time? Could you see if it happens with another player or maybe something like YouTube in a browser?
• Are any other players running when you start the COSMIC Player the first time?

I’m experiencing the same issue and collected some logs while reproducing it.

Environment

• pactl info | grep "Server Name"

  Server Name: PulseAudio (on PipeWire 1.5.85)
  

• pactl list sinks | grep -E 'Name:|Mute:'

  Name: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo
  Mute: no
  

Reproduction Steps

1. Ensure no active audio streams:

   pactl list sink-inputs
   

   (returns nothing)

2. Download a brand-new video file that has never been opened.

3. Open it in COSMIC Player.

Observations

I logged events using:

pactl subscribe

and also captured full sink-input state snapshots on each sink-input event.

When opening a new file, I see:

1. A first stream created with:

   media.name = "pulsesink probe"
   Corked: yes
   Mute: yes
   

   This stream is then removed.

2. A second stream created with:

   media.name = "Playback Stream"
   application.name = "cosmic-player"
   module-stream-restore.id = "sink-input-by-application-name:cosmic-player"
   

   In the initial snapshots of this playback stream, it shows:

   Mute: yes
   

There are multiple change events on the sink-input during initialization.

Additional Behavior

• If I manually unmute the stream:

  pactl set-sink-input-mute <id> 0
  

  then close and reopen the same file, it starts unmuted.

• If I later open a newly downloaded file and it starts muted, previously unmuted files may also start muted again until I unmute once more.

All of the above was observed without the default sink itself being muted.

Let me know if additional logs or specific capture methods would be helpful.
