Very similar to the nearly identical request: Album art support for audio files #40
However, the difference in this request is for when the album art is not embedded in the audio file. Much of my own collection, and how many other maintain their collections, is by having a separate image file of the cover which applies to all files in that folder.
Which means the player would need to read other files in the same folder. And additional complication is that many maintain multiple image files. For instance, front cover, back cover, inside page 1, page 2, etc. I blame the 1990s for the numerous foldout pages of album covers. Typically, the main cover is named either "cover" or "front" if priority needs to be given. If not, they should name it thus.
