Render twice with React v18

When using this package with React v18, it renders the page twice. Checked on Mac - Google Chrome and Safari.

I haven’t been able to reproduce this issue on React 18 so far, and we use this in production on React 18 without issues.

I'll leave the issue open for now but if someone can share a minimal reproduction example (there is a codesandbox in the readme) it would help.
