# Providence

**Mission:**

Providence is a browser extension that traces the earliest publicly accessible source of a news story, helping users assess the provenance of online information.

**Core Goals:**

- Extract metadata from news pages (title, URL, publication date)

- Find earliest accessible version of a story (Wayback Machine / public sources)

- Display results in a simple popup

- Integrate a fun ferret mascot for feedback and engagement

**Future Ideas:**

- Timeline visualization of news mutation

- Client-side plugin architecture

- Gamification and ferret animations

- Multi-source confidence scoring

**Getting Started (Placeholder):**

1. Clone the repo

2. Open extension/ in Chrome or Firefox developer mode

3. Load popup.html as a test
