Every time you paste code into an AI chat (Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, Antigravity), secrets get silently transmitted to cloud-hosted models:

Catches high-randomness tokens that don't match any known pattern β configurable threshold and minimum token length.
The inbound half. A second engine that looks for instructions aimed at your assistant instead of at you.
Hidden characters. The Unicode Tags block (U+E0000βU+E007F) maps one-to-one onto ASCII and renders as absolutely nothing. An attacker can paste a full paragraph of instructions into a code comment and you will never see a character of it. Quell finds it, decodes it, and shows you what it says. It also catches zero-width characters, bidirectional overrides (Trojan Source, CVE-2021-42574) and variation-selector payloads.

It stays quiet. Emoji are full of legitimate invisible characters β ZWJ family sequences, regional-indicator flags, skin-tone modifiers, presentation selectors. Quell recognises all of them and says nothing. A guard that fires on π gets switched off within a day.
Instruction heuristics. Language that only makes sense if it is talking to a model: ignore previous instructions, do not tell the user, chat-template control tokens, embedded exfiltration one-liners, decode-and-execute payloads.
Homoglyphs. Words mixing Latin with lookalike Cyrillic or Greek characters, used to disguise a package name or domain as a familiar one.
Findings appear as red squiggles, distinct from the yellow used for exposed secrets, with a one-click Strip Hidden Characters fix. Stripping is safe by construction: the characters removed are invisible, so what your text visibly says cannot change.
Where it is and isn't precise. The hidden-character layer is deterministic β a Tags-block codepoint has no innocent explanation, so it does not guess. The instruction-phrase layer is a heuristic and will fire on writing that quotes attack phrases: security documentation, prompt-engineering notes, and test fixtures. Running Quell over its own repository flags its own test suite, which is the correct answer. Use
quell.injection.whitelistPatterns, or turn offdetectInstructionOverrides, if you write about this subject for a living.RTL text is safe. Directional marks (LRM/RLM/ALM) are normal in Arabic and Hebrew, so they are reported at low severity and never stripped β removing them would silently break how your localisation renders. Bidirectional overrides, which are the actual Trojan Source attack, are still flagged.
MCP server configs are one of the fastest-growing credential leak sources, because most server install instructions tell you to paste an API token straight into the config's env block, and those files get committed.

Read that last column. Ignore files are best-effort context exclusion, not an access control. They keep a file out of the index; they do not stop an agent that decides to run cat .env. Two things are worth stating plainly rather than glossing over:
- Copilot has no per-developer exclusion at all. Content Exclusion is a Business/Enterprise feature and does not apply in Agent or Edit mode. There is no
.copilotignore, and Quell will not write a file that does nothing. - There is no
.claudeignoreeither. Claude Code excludes paths through deny rules in its own settings, which is the only mechanism in this table that also blocks shell reads. AI Shield writes those rules by merging into.claude/settings.json: your existing settings and your own deny rules are preserved, only Quell's rules are added, and a settings file Quell cannot parse is left completely untouched rather than overwritten.
For agentic tools, pair the shield with the Clipboard Sentry and the Claude Code plugin, which guards the exfiltration path directly rather than hoping the agent respects a file.
