Registering an application with Twitter

To use the Twitter Notifier, you will have to register an application at the Twitter Dev site for your website.

An application is basically the website you will be using the extension on on. Please follow the steps outlined below to do this. Be aware however that if Twitter change the registration and administration process for their applications, these instructions will be wrong. As of today (2011-08-15) they are correct.

  1. If you have a main Twitter account for the website (you should make one if you haven't) then log in to the Twitter Dev Site with your username and password.
  2. When logged in, you will find a 'My Applications' menu under your username at the top right of the page. Click there.
  3. Once there, click the large blue 'Create a new Application' button.
  4. Fill in the application details, and take a second to read the notes for each field. When you come to the Callback URL field, you will need to enter the website name that you wish to use the application with. Don't worry about getting the exact callback URL right, just the domain name will do for now. Remember though, to specify http or https as needed in these URLs.

Once these steps are complete, you will have done most of the work. Just a little tweaking from now on.

  1. Under the settings tab, you will need to change the application type to 'Read and Write' as you will be needing to 'write' to peoples accounts.

That's it for the Twitter setup!
