The Arduino UNO is a simple experimental system. I have bought one with a learning kit containing a lot of external inputs/outputs;

LCD module
4x4 button matrix
LED's
Motor, steppermotor, servo motor
Breadboard
Remote control
Buttons
Resistors, cables, etcetera

It also includes a lot of demo code to get you started with experimenting.
