The Self-Hosted AI Firewall & Governance Layer.

Svalinn AI is a transparent proxy that sits between your users and your LLM (OpenAI, Anthropic, or local models). It enforces security, safety, and custom business policies in real-time, running entirely on your CPU.

Don't burden your application logic with moderation chains. Just point your API client to Svalinn.

🎯 The Problem: Control vs. Chaos

As LLMs move to production, developers face three risks:

  1. Jailbreaks: Users tricking the model into generating harmful content.
  2. Policy Violations: Bots discussing politics, mentioning competitors, or giving financial advice against your brand guidelines.
  3. Observability: Not knowing what your users are actually asking.

Svalinn solves this infrastructurally. It acts as a firewall, sanitizing inputs and outputs before they ever touch your application logic or the upstream provider.

⚠️ Performance & Trade-offs

Svalinn prioritizes Privacy and Control over raw speed. It runs optimized LLMs on your CPU.

  • Latency: Expect ~300ms added latency for input filtering (Fast Mode) or ~1.5s for full defense-in-depth on a standard 8-core CPU.
  • Streaming: To enforce Output Guardrails (checking the bot's answer for violations), Svalinn must buffer the response. Streaming is disabled when Output Guardrails are active.
  • Hardware: Requires ~4GB RAM available for the models. No GPU required.

Option A: Docker (Recommended)

The easiest way to run Svalinn. It handles model downloading and dependencies automatically.

  1. Run the Container:

Option B: Local Installation (Python)

For development or direct integration.

  1. Install:

  2. Download Engines: Svalinn uses optimized GGUF models. This script fetches them (approx 1.5GB):

  3. Run Gateway:

1. The Proxy (/v1/chat/completions)

Drop-in replacement for OpenAI. Forwards safe requests to your UPSTREAM_BASE_URL.

  • Method: POST
  • Behavior: Returns 200 OK with the LLM response, or 400 Bad Request if a policy is violated.

2. Direct Analysis (/v1/analyze)

Useful for testing your policies or using Svalinn as a standalone classifier (without forwarding to an LLM).

3. System Status (/v1/system/status)

Check loaded models and health metrics.

Svalinn is configured via YAML files in the config/ directory.

1. Policies (config/policies.yaml)

Define your business rules. Svalinn injects these dynamically into the detection engine.

Control the trade-off between speed and security. You can toggle components on/off.

3. Normalization (config/normalization.yaml)

Configure how text is cleaned before analysis (Leetspeak decoding, Base64 removal, etc.).

Svalinn logs traffic to a local DuckDB instance (data/svalinn_logs.duckdb).

You can query it to audit blocks using any SQL client:
