Django ERD Generator is a comprehensive command-line tool designed to generate Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) and data dictionaries from Django models. It supports multiple output formats, making it easy to visualise database relationships in different diagramming tools and create detailed documentation. The generator extracts model definitions, fields, and relationships, converting them into structured representations suitable for use with Mermaid.js, PlantUML, and dbdiagram.io, as well as comprehensive Markdown documentation.

GIS Field Support

The generator supports Django's GeoDjango (GIS) fields. Add 'django.contrib.gis' to your INSTALLED_APPS and use GIS field types in your models:

Supported GIS Fields:

  • PointField → point coordinates
  • LineStringField → line/path geometries

  • MultiPointField, MultiLineStringField, MultiPolygonField → collections
  • GeometryCollectionField → mixed geometry collections
  • GeometryField → generic geometry
  • RasterField → raster/image data

GIS fields are automatically detected and rendered with appropriate type names for each dialect (e.g., geometry_point in Mermaid, POINT in PlantUML).

Installation

Install using pip...

pip install django-erd-generator

Add 'django_erd_generator' to your INSTALLED_APPS setting.

Development Setup

This project uses uv for dependency management and ruff for linting and formatting.

Installing uv

Setting up the environment

## Migration Guide

### From black/flake8 to ruff

This project now uses `ruff` as a drop-in replacement for both `black` and `flake8`.

To migrate your project:

1. **Remove old dependencies** from your `pyproject.toml` or `requirements.txt`:
   ```toml

  1. Install ruff:

    pip install ruff
  2. Remove old config files:

    # Delete these if they exist:
    # .flake8
    # setup.cfg (flake8 section)
    # pyproject.toml [tool.black] section
    # pyproject.toml [tool.isort] section
  3. Add ruff config to pyproject.toml:

  4. Update pre-commit hooks (if using):

  5. Run ruff to check and format:

Ruff is 10-100x faster than black+flake8 and has better error messages.

Quickstart

To generate an Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD) in the desired syntax, use the generate_erd command:

python manage.py generate_erd [-h] [-a APPS] [-d DIALECT] [-o OUTPUT]

Options

Option Description
-h, --help Show the help message and exit.
-a APPS, --apps APPS Specify the apps to include in the ERD, separated by commas (e.g., "shopping,polls"). If omitted, all apps will be included.
-d DIALECT, --dialect DIALECT Set the output format. Supported dialects: mermaid, plantuml, dbdiagram.
-o OUTPUT, --output OUTPUT Define the output file path. If omitted, the output is printed to the console.

Examples

Generate an ERD for all apps in Mermaid format and print to console:

python manage.py generate_erd -d mermaid

Generate an ERD for shopping and polls apps in PlantUML format and save to erd.puml:

python manage.py generate_erd -a shopping,polls -d plantuml -o erd.puml

Usage

python manage.py generate_data_dictionary [options]

Options

Option Description

-o, --output Define the output file path for the Markdown file. If omitted, content is printed to stdout.

Examples

Generate documentation for all apps and display in console:

python manage.py generate_data_dictionary

Generate documentation for specific apps:

python manage.py generate_data_dictionary --apps auth,contenttypes,myapp

Save documentation to a file:

python manage.py generate_data_dictionary --output docs/schema_documentation.md

Combine app filtering and file output:

Generated Documentation Structure

The data dictionary includes:

  1. Header Section

    • Project name (automatically detected from Django settings)
    • Git commit hash for version tracking
    • Generation timestamp
  2. Table of Contents

    • Hierarchical navigation with clickable anchor links
    • Organized by app, then by model
    • Quick access to any model documentation
  3. Model Documentation

    • Model signature: Shows the model constructor with all fields
    • Docstring: Model-level documentation from your code
    • Field table: Comprehensive field information including:
      • Primary key indicators
      • Field names and data types
      • Related model links (clickable within the document)
      • Field descriptions and help text
      • Constraint information (nullable, unique, choices)
      • Database-specific properties (max_length, db_index)

Field Information Captured

For each model field, the data dictionary captures:

  • Field Type: The Django field type (CharField, IntegerField, etc.)
  • Data Type: The underlying database data type
  • Primary Key: Whether the field is a primary key
  • Related Models: Links to related models (ForeignKey, ManyToMany)
  • Constraints: Nullable, unique, choices
  • Validation: Max length, database indexing

Supported Versions

⚠️ Python 3.8 Deprecated: Support for Python 3.8 has been dropped as of this release. Please upgrade to Python 3.9 or later.

This project is tested against the following versions:

  • Python: 3.9, 3.10, 3.11, 3.12, 3.13
  • Django: Latest compatible version based on tox dependencies

Ensure you have one of the supported Python versions installed before running tests. You can check your Python version with:

python --version

For testing, tox will automatically create isolated environments for each supported Python version.

Migration Guide: From Black/flake8 to Ruff

If you were using Black and flake8 for linting and formatting, here's how to switch to Ruff:

  1. Remove old tools from your project:

    # Remove from pyproject.toml or requirements files
    # black, flake8, isort, etc.
  2. Remove old configuration files:

    rm .black .flake8 setup.cfg pyproject.toml#tool.black pyproject.toml#tool.flake8
  3. Install Ruff:
